THE VERSES ON BAPTISM IN THE BIBLE
As a baby I was baptized with the sprinkling of water in the Episcopal Church.
This has been the common method of baby baptism in the Catholic Church of which the Episcopal Church merely imitates. Its
root doctrine teaches that unless the baby is baptized, should he or she die their soul would be lost forever. It is
a fear-motivated doctrine, as are so many in the church. The Bible refutes this ancient superstition. The proper example given
in the Bible is that of a baby’s dedication. We have a lovely example of this when Jesus was dedicated in the temple:
“And when eight days were accomplished for the circumcising of the child, his name was called JESUS, which was so named
of the angel before he was conceived in the womb. And when the days of her purification according to the law of Moses were
accomplished, they brought him to Jerusalem, to present him to the Lord; (As it is written in the law of the Lord, Every male
that openeth the womb shall be called holy to the Lord).” Lu.2:21-23. The
following are all the verses, in chronological order, on the Bible doctrine of Baptism. They illustrate its purpose, its public
declaration of faith in Jesus Christ as the Redeemer of our world from the bondage of sin and death, and its blessing of all
who share in the faith of the glory to one day come to the Earth. Ps.51:7
Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean: wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow. Isa.1:16-20
Wash you, make you clean; put away the evil of your doings from before mine eyes; cease to do evil; Learn to do well; seek
judgment, relieve the oppressed, judge the fatherless, plead for the widow. Come now, and let us reason together, saith the
LORD: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.
If ye be willing and obedient, ye shall eat the good of the land: But if ye refuse and rebel, ye shall be devoured with the
sword: for the mouth of the LORD hath spoken it. Matt.3:11 I indeed baptize
you with water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall
baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire. Matt.20:22,23 But Jesus
answered and said, Ye know not what ye ask. Are ye able to drink of the cup that I shall drink of, and to be baptized with
the baptism that I am baptized with? They say unto him, We are able. And he saith unto them, Ye shall drink indeed of my cup,
and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with: but to sit on my right hand, and on my left, is not mine to give,
but it shall be given to them for whom it is prepared of my Father. Mk.1:5
And there went out unto him [John the Baptist] all the land of Judaea, and they of Jerusalem, and were all baptized of him
in the river of Jordan, confessing their sins. Mk.1:9 And it came to pass
in those days, that Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee, and was baptized of John in Jordan. Mk.16:16
He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned. Lu.3:12-14
Then came also publicans to be baptized, and said unto him, Master, what shall we do? And he said unto them, Exact no more
than that which is appointed you. And the soldiers likewise demanded of him, saying , And what shall we do? And he said unto
them, Do violence to no man, neither accuse any falsely; and be content with your wages. Lu.12:49,50
I am come to send fire on the earth; and what will I, if it be already kindled? But I have a baptism to be baptized with;
and how am I straitened till it be accomplished! Jn.3:22-36 After these
things came Jesus and his disciples into the land of Judaea; and there he tarried with them, and baptized. And John also was
baptizing in Aenon near to Salim, because there was much water there: and they came, and were baptized. For John was not yet
cast into prison. Then there arose a question between some of John's disciples and the Jews about purifying. And they
came unto John, and said unto him, Rabbi, he that was with thee beyond Jordan, to whom thou barest witness, behold, the same
baptizeth, and all men come to him. John answered and said, A man can receive nothing, except it be given him from heaven.
Ye yourselves bear me witness, that I said, I am not the Christ, but that I am sent before him. He that hath the bride is
the bridegroom: but the friend of the bridegroom, which standeth and heareth him, rejoiceth greatly because of the bridegroom's
voice: this my joy therefore is fulfilled. He must increase, but I must decrease. He that cometh from above is above all:
he that is of the earth is earthly, and speaketh of the earth: he that cometh from heaven is above all. And what he hath seen
and heard, that he testifieth; and no man receiveth his testimony. He that hath received his testimony hath set to his seal
that God is true. For he whom God hath sent speaketh the words of God: for God giveth not the Spirit by measure unto him.
The Father loveth the Son, and hath given all things into his hand. He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and
he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him. Jn.4:1-3
When therefore the Lord knew how the Pharisees had heard that Jesus made and baptized more disciples than John, (Though Jesus
himself baptized not, but his disciples,) He left Judaea, and departed again into Galilee. Acts
1:5 For John truly baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence. Acts 2:38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name
of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. Acts
2:41 Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand
souls. Acts 8:12 But when they believed Philip preaching the things concerning
the kingdom of God, and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women. Acts
8:14-17 Now when the apostles which were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent unto them
Peter and John: Who, when they were come down, prayed for them, that they might receive the Holy Ghost: (For as yet he was
fallen upon none of them: only they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.) Then laid they their hands on them, and
they received the Holy Ghost. Acts 8:36-39 And as they went on their way,
they came unto a certain water: and the eunuch said, See, here is water; what doth hinder me to be baptized? And Philip said,
If thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayest. And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.
And he commanded the chariot to stand still: and they went down both into the water, both Philip and the eunuch; and he baptized
him. And when they were come up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord caught away Philip, that the eunuch saw him no more:
and he went on his way rejoicing. Acts 9:10-22 And there was a certain disciple
at Damascus, named Ananias; and to him said the Lord in a vision, Ananias. And he said, Behold, I am here, Lord. And the Lord
said unto him, Arise, and go into the street which is called Straight, and enquire in the house of Judas for one called Saul,
of Tarsus: for, behold, he prayeth, And hath seen in a vision a man named Ananias coming in, and putting his hand on him,
that he might receive his sight. Then Ananias answered, Lord, I have heard by many of this man, how much evil he hath done
to thy saints at Jerusalem: And here he hath authority from the chief priests to bind all that call on thy name. But the Lord
said unto him, Go thy way: for he is a chosen vessel unto me, to bear my name before the Gentiles, and kings, and the children
of Israel: For I will shew him how great things he must suffer for my name's sake. And Ananias went his way, and entered
into the house; and putting his hands on him said, Brother Saul, the Lord, even Jesus, that appeared unto thee in the way
as thou camest, hath sent me, that thou mightest receive thy sight, and be filled with the Holy Ghost. And immediately there
fell from his eyes as it had been scales: and he received sight forthwith, and arose, and was baptized. And when he had received
meat, he was strengthened. Then was Saul certain days with the disciples which were at Damascus. And straightway he preached
Christ in the synagogues, that he is the Son of God. But all that heard him were amazed, and said; Is not this he that destroyed
them which called on this name in Jerusalem, and came hither for that intent, that he might bring them bound unto the chief
priests? But Saul increased the more in strength, and confounded the Jews which dwelt at Damascus, proving that this is very
Christ. Acts 10:34-48 Then Peter opened his mouth, and said, Of a truth
I perceive that God is no respecter of persons: But in every nation he that feareth him, and worketh righteousness, is accepted
with him. The word which God sent unto the children of Israel, preaching peace by Jesus Christ: (he is Lord of all:) That
word, I say, ye know, which was published throughout all Judaea, and began from Galilee, after the baptism which John preached;
How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were
oppressed of the devil; for God was with him. And we are witnesses of all things which he did both in the land of the Jews,
and in Jerusalem; whom they slew and hanged on a tree: Him God raised up the third day, and shewed him openly; Not to all
the people, but unto witnesses chosen before of God, even to us, who did eat and drink with him after he rose from the dead.
And he commanded us to preach unto the people, and to testify that it is he which was ordained of God to be the Judge of quick
and dead. To him give all the prophets witness, that through his name whosoever believeth in him shall receive remission of
sins. While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the word. And they of the circumcision
which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the
Holy Ghost. For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God. Then answered Peter, Can any man forbid water, that these
should not be baptized, which have received the Holy Ghost as well as we? And he commanded them to be baptized in the name
of the Lord. Then prayed they him to tarry certain days. Acts 19:1-6 And
it came to pass, that, while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul having passed through the upper coasts came to Ephesus: and finding
certain disciples, He said unto them, Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed? And they said unto him, We have not
so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost. And he said unto them, Unto what then were ye baptized? And they said, Unto
John's baptism. Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they
should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus. When they heard this, they were baptized in the
name of the Lord Jesus. And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues,
and prophesied. Rom.6:1-12 What shall we say then? Shall we continue in
sin, that grace may abound? 2 God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein? Know ye not, that so
many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into
death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness
of life. For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection:
Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not
serve sin. For he that is dead is freed from sin. Now if we be dead with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him:
Knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death hath no more dominion over him. For in that he died, he
died unto sin once: but in that he liveth, he liveth unto God. Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin,
but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord. Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it
in the lusts thereof. I Cor.1:14,15 I thank God that I baptized none of
you, but Crispus and Gaius; Lest any should say that I had baptized in mine own name. I
Cor.1:17 For Christ sent me not to baptize , but to preach the gospel: not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ
should be made of none effect. I Cor.10:1-4 Moreover, brethren, I would
not that ye should be ignorant , how that all our fathers were under the cloud, and all passed through the sea; And were all
baptized unto Moses in the cloud and in the sea; And did all eat the same spiritual meat; And did all drink the same spiritual
drink: for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ. I
Cor.12:12-14 For as the body is one, and hath many members, and all the members of that one body, being many, are one body:
so also is Christ. For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond
or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit. For the body is not one member, but many. I Cor.15:29 Else what shall they do which are baptized for the dead, if the dead rise not at all?
why are they then baptized for the dead? Gal.3:22-29 But the scripture hath
concluded all under sin, that the promise by faith of Jesus Christ might be given to them that believe. But before faith came,
we were kept under the law, shut up unto the faith which should afterwards be revealed. Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster
to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith. But after that faith is come, we are no longer under a schoolmaster.
For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus. For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put
on Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all
one in Christ Jesus. And if ye be Christ's, then are ye Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise. Rev.7:14 These are they which came out of great tribulation, and have washed their
robes, and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.
